How to support your kid at home?

‘Gifts’ for your children

The best support parents can give at home is to ensure a calm environment with interesting activities, discussions about daily life, toys and books that stimulate thinking, and language skills along with emotional intelligence.

Structure is important. Regular meal times, bedtimes, outings and parent-child special time.

Socialization happens naturally at home- doing things together and showing your child acceptable behaviors and limits, good manners and how to express herself appropriately through spoken language, as well as with the body. Socialization is also nurtured through activities with friends, meeting new people in various situations, and teaching proper etiquette in different environments.

Emotional intelligence is the most important factor in social awareness and personal happiness. It is an essential ingredient for a calm brain and will lead to academic success. Some ways to build emotional skills: Share your own feelings; Notice your child’s emotions and help him/her express them - “You feel angry because it’s time to go.” Talk about pictures and read stories about emotions, and model how to calm down.

Independence at home can be nurtured in many ways. Young children will need some help, but they can participate in setting and clearing the table, wiping and sweeping, putting on clothes and shoes, putting things away, working out problems, packing and unpacking their school bag, and more.
